I don't know why exactly, but I found this post very moving. The sort of exhuberance of people being people, interacting and exchanging ideas plesantries, everyone's guard down, preconcieved notions washed away as equals. The contrast with the cruise ship with barriers between people. So much there.

I have spent many hours on harbours watching the sun come up, waiting for ferries. That mixture of tiredness and travel sometimes makes you feel like you're hallucinating places that should be too beautiful to exist!

Love this post, how you write, describe people and things and your photos are great too. I have been using the Port of Piraeus for more than fifty years because I live on the island of Naxos, and despite my fairly intimate knowledge of the port, I had not, until reading what you say considered it's true significance in terms of all the islands it serves, and probably as you write, the world's largest passenger port.

Your response is very kind. Wonderful to know you’re on Naxos. How is it? Touristic or empty? I am told to travel to Amorgos, nearby. I bookmarked your stories for later read, exciting!

Naxos has become a major tourist destination over the past years and in August it is heaving! But that really only affects the main town and the beaches down the west coast south of Naxos Town. May-June-early July, September-October are to my mind the best months to visit, but that goes for many Greek Islands. Even in summer, if you avoid the tourist destinations in the interior, you see the island as it is without the crowds: Big, surprisingly varied and dramatic scenery, it's a traditional, agricultural economy and still up to a point, self sufficient. If you get down this way, give me a shout! Amorgos, which I see everyday from my house is very special. Every island has its own flair and feel, which you know very well yourself, but I love Amorgos. Just sailing into the main, small port town of Katapola, you know you have come to somewhere very special. I'd guess you wold love it. Kalo Taxidi.
