Absolutely spot on about Facebook. I recently reactivated my account after a decade just out of curiosity. Most of my friends seem to have left in the meantime but of the ones who remained, it was impossible to see any of their updates amongst the low effort rubbish being pushed by the algorithm. Newsletters and email are a nod to the past, a simpler time during the early internet.

Thanks for the article. I started looking more seriously at Substack after one frustrating experience after another on Facebook. Most recently, I ran into issues in a private group centered around a well-known left-leaning cable news network, where any post that was even mildly critical of the network or its on-air personalities was held back. My comments were polite and, I believe, thoughtful, so it felt less about tone and more about a “love it or leave it” approach to moderation. Experiences like that are what ultimately pushed me toward Substack.
